What are Michigan’s PIP medical coverage choices?
Michigan offers unlimited PIP medical, $500,000, $250,000, $250,000 with eligible exclusions, a restricted $50,000 Medicaid option, and an eligible Medicare opt-out. The choices involving exclusions, Medicaid, or opting out have specific eligibility and documentation requirements. Health coverage does not automatically make every option available.
Ask your agent to compare annual premiums and identify who in your household is covered or excluded. Then ask what would pay for long-term care if medical expenses exceeded the selected cap. Unlimited PIP has no aggregate medical dollar cap, but payment still depends on the governing law and the claim’s circumstances.
See DIFS’s PIP coverage choices and Chapters 3 and 5 of the guide. Our Michigan no-fault auto insurance page covers how these benefits are claimed after a crash.
Five coverage layers to review together
| Coverage | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| PIP medical | What is the annual price of unlimited, $500,000 and $250,000 coverage, and what happens after a cap is reached? |
| Bodily injury liability | What limits protect against covered claims by other people, and what would an umbrella add? |
| Uninsured motorist (UM) | Does the policy cover an uninsured or unidentified at-fault driver, and what proof is required? |
| Underinsured motorist (UIM) | When is another driver considered underinsured, and how do limits, setoffs and settlement consent work? |
| Vehicle protection | Which collision form, deductible, comprehensive coverage and rental limits fit the household? |
The booklet’s quote worksheet helps you compare the same limits, drivers, vehicles and endorsements across carriers. A lower premium can reflect either different protection or different pricing.
Michigan benefit limits for the 2026 edition
DIFS sets accident-date-specific work-loss and survivor-loss maximums. For crashes from October 1, 2025 through September 30, 2026, the maximum is $7,201 per 30-day period. For crashes from October 1, 2026 through September 30, 2027, it is $7,455. These are maximums, not automatic payments. See DIFS Bulletin 2026-20-INS.
For July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2027, the individual annual deductible ceiling for qualifying non-Medicare health coverage remains $6,579. The plan must also satisfy the auto-injury coverage requirements. See DIFS Bulletin 2026-08-INS. Check current guidance when making a coverage decision.

- Compare the annual price and consequences of each available PIP medical level.
- Confirm required health-coverage documentation and what happens if that coverage ends.
- Ask for both UM and UIM quotes and review their exclusions and deadlines.
- Check collision type, deductibles, rental limits, and rideshare or delivery restrictions.
- Keep written answers and repeat the review after a household, job, vehicle or health-plan change.

Michigan auto insurance questions
Does Michigan no-fault insurance pay for car repairs?
PIP concerns injury benefits. Collision ordinarily pays for covered damage to your moving vehicle. PPI and the limited mini-tort remedy serve different purposes. Check your collision form and deductible before a loss.
Are uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage required?
UM and UIM are optional in Michigan. Their terms govern who is insured, when coverage applies, how payments are reduced, and what notice or settlement consent is required. Do not assume every policy provides both.
Does health insurance provide the same protection as PIP?
No. Compare actual services, exclusions, deductibles and eligibility requirements. A plan that qualifies for a particular PIP choice can still differ substantially from PIP in the care it pays for after a catastrophic injury.
Does PIP pay pain and suffering?
No. A claim for noneconomic damages against a legally responsible driver generally requires Michigan’s injury threshold. Qualifying excess economic claims have different rules. The guide explains the distinction in Chapter 7.
What should I do if required health coverage ends?
Contact your auto insurer immediately. A PIP medical exclusion or opt-out can trigger a 30-day requirement to arrange PIP medical coverage. Confirm any replacement health coverage preserves eligibility. Do not assume the old election remains safe.
How long do I have to make a Michigan PIP claim?
Notice, filing suit and the recovery of older expenses involve separate rules. Assigned Claims Plan and UM/UIM claims have additional requirements. Give prompt written notice and obtain advice about the actual deadlines; do not wait for negotiations to end. Chapter 13 explains these separate clocks. Our no-fault insurance claims page explains what the process looks like in practice.
