The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently officially announced the proposal to change to fuel economy standards for all passenger cars and light trucks in years 2024-2026. According to NHTSA, the proposed fuel standards would help save drivers hundreds of billions of dollars on gas, decrease pollution, and help curtail the climate crisis.
The NHTSA also reported that the new standards would increase fuel efficiency 8% annually for model years 2024-2026 and increase the estimated fleetwide average by 12 miles per gallon for model year 2026, compared to model year 2021. By 2030 U.S. consumers are estimated to see close to $140 billion in fuel savings for new vehicles sold and by 2050 the savings increase to $470 billion.
Fuel economy is only one of several fronts that consumers can expect to see an advances when buying a new car. Most major vehicle manufacturers are now including some advanced safety technology in many base model cars and light trucks. Consumers may already be familiar with some of the more common forms of safety technology behind the wheel like full time all wheel driver systems, automatic high beams, backup cameras, automatic warning systems, integrated ambient lighting, but there are many other systems being offered in new makes and models.
Driver assist features include Lane-keeping or centering assistance, Adaptive cruise control, consumers have a lot of new drivers assist safety systems to consider buying a new vehicle. To prevent car collisions or hitting other objects the collision warning (FCW) systems provide visual, audible, or tactile alerts to warn a driver and in some systems even automatically apply the brakes. Active safety systems such as automatic braking automatically apply the brakes when a collision is detected to avoid car crashes.
