On May 5, 2023, Michigan State Police (MSP) from the Metro North post investigated a traffic crash involving an allegedly drunk driving wrong way driver. Michigan State police re-routed traffic at Gratiot Ave and Westbound 1-696.
According to the Detroit Regional Communication Center (DRCC) the callers reported that the driver of a Jeep Liberty was driving the wrong way eastbound in the westbound lanes of I-696 near Coolidge Hwy.
MSP Troopers were able to locate the driver near Liberty at Dequindre Road, in Warren MI, which had travelled eastbound in the westbound lanes on the right shoulder attempting to alert the wrong way driver. Tragically, the wrong way driver of the Jeep Liberty struck a Chevy SUV head-on in the left lane of the freeway.
Tragically, the 62 year old driver from Harper Woods MI in the innocent Chevy SUV was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. The drunk driver and passenger of the Jeep Liberty sustained minor injuries and are suspected of being illegal driving intoxicated. A blood draw was completed on Jeep Liberty suspect, and he was treated for minor injuries.
Preliminary MSP investigation found that the suspect drunk driver also had a suspended license. The suspect will be charged after he medically cleared. The drunk driver will be taken to jail and be arraigned after he is released from the hospital.
